Mirchi ka Salan is a side dish to the very popular and tasty Hyderabadi dum Biriyani. Let me first list out the ingredients.
For a family of 4 persons
1. Coconut: 10-12 small pieces
2. Peanuts: 10-12
3. Sesame seeds: 2 full spoons (Til seeds in hindi)
4. Posta seeds: 1 spoon
5. Long Chillies: 8-10
6. Two medium sized onions (chopped)
7. half spoon turmeric powder.
8. Half spoon garam masala.
9. Salt
10. Curry leaves
11. Mint leaves
12. Cooking oil
13. Tamarind water: 1 bowl
14. jaggery
15. cumin seeds: 1 spoon
16: ginger: 1 medium piece
17: Garlic: 10-12 pieces
First of all roast coconut, peanuts, sesame seeds and posta seeds in a frying pan without oil. Once they are roasted put it in a bowl. put some turmeric powder and garam masala , ginger pieces and garlic pieces.Add some water and grind it properly, till it becomes a fine paste.
Take some oil in a frying pan. cut the green chillies from their middle and put them in the pan. once they are fried take it out and dry out all the oils through a tissue paper. To the same oil Put cumin seeds, red chilly and curry leaves. This entire process should be done in low flame. Then put the chopped onions to it. Fry it till it turns golden. Then add the paste to it that we had prepared earlier. cook it in low flame. Add water to it (amount that you think is necessary). Put the lid and keep it in low flame for 15-20 minutes.
After 15-20 minutes, add the tamarind water, jaggery, fried green chillies and salt to taste and stir it for 2-3 minutes. Close the lid and allow it to cook for another 15 minutes (in low flame).
Your Mirchi ka salan is ready. Spread some mints leaves on top of it and serve with hot and spicy Dum Biriyani.
